(Canton, N.Y.)- Juniors Jackie Sedlacek (Endicott, N.Y.) and Kaitlin Myers (Dannemora, N.Y.) each posted a double-double as the SUNY Canton women’s basketball team opened the New Year with a 77-70 win over the University of Maine at Fort Kent in Canton.

Sedlacek scored 16 points and hauled in 16 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and Myers dropped in a game-high 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds for her second of the year.

“The important thing today was that everyone contributed and we truly played as ateam,” said head coach Bruce Tallon. “Our players worked very hard on the defensive end. We’ve had some tough games up to this point and I’m very pleased to start out the semester with a win like today.”

It was a back-and-forth contest through the first 20 minutes as there were seven lead changes. The Roos did there damage on the inside as they outscored Fort Kent 12-4 in the paint. The Roos used a 10-4 run at the midway point of the first half to collect a 30-26 halftime lead.

The see-sawing continued to start the second half as both teams traded points over the first five minutes before the Roos used another explosive run to take the lead. Trailing 39-37 with 13:41 on the clock, Sedlacek nailed a jumper that tied the game and started a run of 10 straight points. Sedlacek hit another jumper during that stretch sandwiched between layups from Brittany Crump (North Lawrence, N.Y.), Cortney Whalen (Hammond, N.Y.), and Myers and suddenly the Roos were up 47-39.

The Bengals trimmed the lead to four points on a triple from Taylor Boucher a short time later but the Roos responded again on back-to-back 3s from Myers and the lead was boosted back into double figures.

Free throws then secured the win for SUNY Canton as they converted 10 of 14 attempts in the final minute after Fort Kent was forced to foul to stop the clock.

Freshman Tricia Boland (Hammond, N.Y.), who joined the team this semester, canned four 3-pointers in her debut for 12 points. Freshman Elissa St. Germain (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) added nine points and five rebounds. Freshman Corrine Riegel (Bainbridge, N.Y.) had seven points and three assists, and Whalen finished with six points and three rebounds.

The Bengals were led by Megan Land who drilled five threes and had a team-high 19 points and three assists. Boucher also had five triples for 15 points.

The Roos host the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Monday, Jan. 9 at 12 p.m.
