(Canton, N.Y.)- Freshman Cortney Whalen (Hammond, N.Y.) notched her first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds helping the SUNY Canton women’s basketball team topple Bard College 65-33 Friday night in the opening round of the Kevin Fee / Roos Classic in Canton.

The Roos picked up their first win of the year improving to 1-2 while the Raptors fell to 0-2 overall. SUNY Canton plays SUNY Potsdam in the second on Saturday at 2 p.m. Bard and Morrisville State College play first at 12 p.m. Potsdam beat Morrisville 68-57 in the other first-round game. The tournament schedule was already set for the second day of games.

SUNY Canton put on an impressive defensive display as they held the Raptors to just 22 percent shooting from the floor, including just 10 percent in the first half. The Roos out rebounded an opponent for the third straight game with a 45-34 advantage on Friday.

“We made a defensive switch before today’s game and it really seemed to help us today,” said head coach Bruce Tallon.

The Roos scored the first five points of the game and led 13-2 with seven minutes gone off the clock when junior Jackie Sedlacek (Endicott, N.Y.) buried a 3-pointer from the right wing. The lead would eventually swell to as much as 21 points after Whalen came up with a steal and scored on the opposite end making it 29-8 in favor of the home team. SUNY Canton would lead at halftime 29-10.

Bard scored the first points of the second half but the Roos responded reeling off seven straight points, five coming from freshman Janise Torres (Albany, N.Y.) to open a 22-point lead. SUNY Canton would cruise from there behind a balanced scoring attack that saw eight players score at least four points in the game.

Freshman guard Corrine Riegal (Bainbridge, N.Y.) also reached double figures with 11 points and three rebounds. Sedlacek finished with nine points and three assists. Junior Kaitlin Myers (Dannemora, N.Y.) added eight points and three rebounds, and Danielle English (Brentwood, N.Y.) had seven points and two steals.

“We have a young team but they’re starting to get an idea of who’s on the team and starting to mesh with one another,” Tallon added.

Liz Freud had nine points and six rebounds to lead Bard and Victoria Fleisher added eight points and four assists.
