(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton and Clarkson University women’s soccer teams met to “Kick for a Cure” Wednesday night in Canton to join in the fight against breast cancer. The Golden Knights beat the Roos 2-0 but both teams came away successful from the night.
Through donations collected at the game the Roos raised several hundred dollars that will go directly to the Susan G. Kormen Foundation of Central New York to assist in life-saving research, education, screenings, and treatment programs in the fight against breast cancer.
“I was very happy with the way the night went even through the bad weather,” said head coach Kate Thomas-Moody. “This is one of the most personal fundraisers we could possibly do. Breast cancer awareness and relevant statistics is very important to the 24 young women on my team right now team and our amazing campus community.”
Both squads and staff members were decked out in pink on Wednesday and both teams had to battle unpleasant playing conditions that included on and off rain storms, high winds and temperatures in the mid to low 50s. Clarkson scored both of their goals in the first half with the first coming in the 11th minute when Taylor Abraham scored from Hilary Mosher. The second goal came in the 30th minute when Cailey Nieto lofted a high shot from the right wing that caught Roos goalie Holli-Jo Cota (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) off balance. Cota got a hand on the ball but after falling backwards couldn’t keep it from crossing the goal line.
