(Presque Isle, Maine)- Freshmen Jena Cryderman (Madrid, N.Y.) and Jessica Rhodes (Alpine, N.Y.) each stroked a run-scoring double guiding the SUNY Canton softball team to a 6-1 win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in the final game of a tripleheader on Sunday in Maine.

Sophomore Emiley Walters (Lancaster, N.Y.) collected six hits on the day, two in each game including her sixth home run of the spring to lead the Roos, who dropped the first game 8-2 and the second game 8-7 before pulling out in the victory in game three. This was the second week in a row the two teams played a tripleheader. The first was a week ago in Canton after the first of two doubleheaders was rained out and both schools decided to make up one of those games today.

In that final contest the Roos built a 4-0 lead after three innings and stretched their advantage to 6-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth frame. In the first inning junior Heather Lottie (Canton, N.Y.) led off with a single and came around to score on an RBI-groundout by Cryderman. In the third inning Cryderman and Rhodes each ripped doubles to left field bringing in two more runs to make it 3-0 and junior Jessica Measheaw (Hammond, N.Y.) upped the led to 4-0 with an RBI single of her own. Freshman Olivia Blackmore (Madrid, N.Y.) drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the sixth inning and Walters had a sacrifice fly to score the Roos’ final runs. Walters finished 2-for-3 and Lottie notched the complete game win striking out two and scattering five hits over seven innings.

Walters went 2-for-2 with a double in game one. Freshman Kaylin Switzer (Orwell, N.Y.) drove in both of SUNY Canton’s runs with a pair of groundouts in the fourth and sixth innings. Lottie again went the distance for the Roos fanning two batters over six innings while giving up six hits.

In the second game the Roos scored six runs in the first two innings. Cryderman and sophomore Shiloh Bourgeois (Keesville, N.Y.) each laced an RBI-single in the top of the first inning putting the visiting team on top 2-0. The Roos posted four more runs in the second off an RBI-triple from Lottie, a solo home run by Walters, an RBI-single from Rhodes and another RBI by Cryderman. Walters added a single and Cryderman also finished with two hits. Meashaw had two strikeouts and surrendered nine hits in five innings and Lottie allowed one hit in one inning of relief.

The Roos wrap up their season with a doubleheader at home against SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday, May 2.
