Roos volleyball defeat Plattsburgh in 4 behind balanced offense

Plattsburgh, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team used a balanced effort to earn a 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 24-26, 25-11) victory against host Plattsburgh State on Wednesday evening.

The Roos (16-4) scored five straight points to get out to a 10-4 lead in the opening set after three consecutive errors from host Plattsburgh. The Cardinals drew within one point at 13-12 midway through the set but SUNY Canton pulled away late for the 25-20 first frame win.

SUNY Canton got out to a quick 7-3 start again in the second stanza but the hosts battled all the way back to take their first lead of the match at 11-10. Trailing 13-11 the Roos scored the next five points, as they did not trail again en route to the 25-18 victory.

Plattsburgh (7-11) led 4-1 to open the third set but SUNY Canton battled back to take seven of the next 11 points to knot the set at 8-8. In a back-and-forth frame the Roos were within match point leading 24-23 but after a Plattsburgh State timeout the Cardinals scored the final three points to take the third set.

The Roos quickly turned the momentum flying out to a 13-4 start to the fourth set as they cruised to close out the match 25-11.

Morgan Bills (Walworth, NY) led the way with 18 kills hitting .421 (18-2-38). Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) was effective on both sides of the ball recording 12 kills (12-4-28) to go with 14 digs. Haley Riley (Lowville, NY) chipped in with eight kills, while Lindsay Bryer (Wilson, NY) added a season-high six putdowns to go with 13 digs. Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ON) was a force defensively with 34 digs. Peyton Robinson (Bloomfield, NY) dished out 41 assists to go with 11 digs.

The women's volleyball team is back in action on Saturday when it opens play at the Clarkson Tournament v. Muhlenberg College at 4:30 p.m.
