Roos Tsiaras and Marckese strong at the plate against Briarcliffe

(Bethpage, NY) The SUNY Canton baseball team went extra innings in the second game of a doubleheader versus Briarcliffe College this afternoon. The Roos battled yet dropped both games of the series 6-4 and 8-7.

In game one, sophomore Phil Tsiaras (Toronto, Ontario) went two for four at the plate with two runs batted in. Sophomore Jordan Hunneyman (Redwood, NY) was walked two teams, scoring one run and one RBI.

Freshman pitcher James Amelotte (Cornwall, Ontario) pitched the entire first game, striking out seven and facing 26 batters.

Game two saw the Roos jump to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, which they held and added runs to through the top of the 5th inning. Briarcliffe began to mount a comeback, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 5th and four runs in the bottom of the 6th, tying up the game at 6-6. Freshman Jared Marckese (Lecanton, Fla.) went three for four at the plate, scoring one run and batting one runner in. Hunneyman continued his offensive form scoring two runs in the game.

Junior Zack Rosenthal (Miami, Fla.) started on the mound for the Roos, pitching 5 1/3 innings, striking out three. Senior pitcher Josh Soffer (Ottawa, Ontario) came in to relieve Rosenthal, tossing 4 1/3 innings. Soffer pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th moving the game into extra innings.

The battle continued for three more innings, seeing the Roos score one more but the Bulldogs scoring two, for a final score of 8-7. The Roos finished with 12 hits in game two and Soffer struck out seven batters in the effort.

SUNY Canton will face St. Joseph’s College in doubleheader action tomorrow in Long Island, NY, with the first pitch being tossed at noon. Follow the action on Twitter @RoosBaseball.
