(Potsdam, N.Y.)- Freshman Karyss Terrance (Hogansburg, N.Y.) scored 17 points and senior Kaitlin Myers (Dannemora, N.Y.) added 16 points as the SUNY Canton women’s basketball team topped Clarkson University 69-62 in their season opener on Thursday in Potsdam.

The Roos (1-0) knocked down nine 3-pointers and shot 16-for-22 from the free throw line (72%) to snap a nine-game losing streak to the Golden Knights.

Terrance was impressive in her debut with the Roos as she shot 6-for-16 from the field, converted 5 of 6 free throw attempts and grabbed eight rebounds. Myers, who led SUNY Canton in almost every statistical category as a junior, had another terrific all-around game with six rebounds, four blocks and two steals. The Saranac High graduate was 7-for-8 from the free throw line and nine of her points came from beyond the three point arc.

In the opening 20 minutes the Knights jumped out to an early lead which they held for the first 10 minutes before a pair of free throws from Terrance tied the game 11-11 with 10:19 remaining. A Myers 3–pointer pushed the Roos ahead 14-11 on their next possession and the lead would then change hands three more times before Clarkson emerged with a 28-27 halftime lead.

Just over a minute into the second half, junior Joelle Percy (Black River, N.Y.), a transfer from Jefferson Community College, buried a triple that would put SUNY Canton ahead for good. The Roos lead swelled to as much as 15 points following a pair of free throws from Myers with 4:06 on the clock before Clarkson slashed the lead down to five points with just 30 seconds left. But the Roos secured the win making 5 of 7 free throws in the closing seconds of the regulation.

Percy almost notched a double-double in her SUNY Canton debut coming up one point shy finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds. Junior Alicia Uhlein (Watertown, N.Y.), another transfer from Jefferson, added 15 points, five rebounds and two assists.

Ashley Loggins posted a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds to lead Clarkson (0-1).

The Roos play their home opener this Friday, Nov. 16 when they host Albany College of Pharmacy at 8 p.m. in the opening round of the Kevin Fee / Roos Classic in Canton. Morrisville State College plays Bard College at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 17 Morrisville plays Albany at 12 p.m. and SUNY Canton plays Bard at 2 p.m.
