(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton baseball team beat the University of Maine at Presque Isle in all three games they played on Friday.  The Roos won the opener 8-4, rallied for a 5-2 win in game two and then blanked the Owls 6-0 in the final game.

The Roos and the Owls were scheduled to play one doubleheader on Friday and another on Saturday, but with the forecast of rain on Saturday, agreed to get in as many games as possible on Friday resulting in the tripleheader.

The Roos received complete-game wins on the mound in all three games from a trio of pitchers from Ottawa.  Dillon James (Ottawa, Ontario) won the opener as the freshman recorded two strikeouts and scattered nine hits over seven innings.  Junior Tyler Durward (Ottawa, Ontario) was the winner in the second game with a five-strikeout, three-hit performance, and then freshman Casey Floyd (Ottawa, N.Y.) posted his first career shutout as he fanned four batters and limited the Owls to three hits.

In game one, SUNY Canton posted four runs in the bottom of the first inning and four more in the bottom of the third.  In the opening stanza, after James forced the Owls to go three-and-out to start the game, the Roos loaded the bases following walks from Larry Jankowski (Oneonta, N.Y.) and Nick Belile (Norwood, N.Y.) and a single from Evan Hammond (Ottawa, Ontario).  Danny Perez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) then plated Hammond and Jankowski for a 2-0 lead.  After Perez and Belile advanced a base on an Owls’ error, they both came home when Jordan Hunneyman (Redwood, N.Y.) ripped a two-run triple deep to center field.

In the third inning, Tom Darling (Oswego, N.Y.) blasted his first home run of the season and second of his career with a three-run shot that cleared the left-field fence.  Michael Zelyez (Brasher Falls, N.Y.) also had an RBI-single in the inning.

In the second game, the Roos rallied back from a 2-1 deficit after four innings with a four-run fifth inning, helped out by a pair of Presque Isle errors to start the inning.  The Roos loaded the bases for the second time on the day and Hammond brought two runs home with a two-run single to center field and then Belile cracked a two-run double to center to complete the rally.  Durward allowed just two hits over the next two innings retiring six of the eight batters he faced to earn his first win of the year.  Hammond finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

In the nightcap, the Roos built a 5-0 lead after three innings and tacked on more run in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Belile had an RBI-groundout in the first inning, Jeff Lake (Battersea, Ontario) laced an RBI-single in the second inning, and Perez and Thomas Fearon (Ajax, Ontario) each had run-scoring singles in the third inning.  Belile also scored off an Owls’ error in the third and Lake added a sacrifice fly in the sixth for the final run.

Zelyez and Fearon each had doubles in the final game.

Ted Walker had four hits on the day for the Owls, who used six different pitchers throughout the afternoon.
