(Winchendon, Mass.)- The SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team settled for a weekend split with Franklin Pierce University after the Ravens beat the Roos 3-1 on Saturday at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon, Mass.

The Roos dropped to 3-6 overall while the Ravens moved to 3-2.

Both teams skated to a scoreless first period before the Ravens struck first midway through the second stanza to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman goalie Luis Puig (Chicago, Ill.) made an initial save on a shot from the Ravens Sean Dunn, but Brendan Glynn pounced on the rebound and tucked in the puck for the game’s first score.

With time winding down in the second period and the Roos on the power play, senior John Payne (Port Moody, B.C.) finished a play in the slot for his team-leading fifth goal of the year at the 18:18 mark to even the game at 1-1. Senior Corey Frizell (Orleans, Ontario) and junior Cory Giczewski (Fountain Valley, Calif.) assisted on Payne’s goal. Franklin Pierce’s Brendan McCarron scored the eventual game-winning goal with just 15 seconds left in the period and he tacked on one more in the third period for the final two-goal win.

Puig (1-4) finished with 27 saves for the Roos, who play their seventh straight road game on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at St. Michael’s College in Vermont.

Brendan McCarron scored twice for the Ravens and Dave O’Brien had 29 saves.
