(Oneonta, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader to Oneonta State Monday afternoon, dropping the first game 10-0 in five innings and the nightcap 7-6 in eight innings.
The Roos (10-16) fought back from a 3-0 deficit through five innings of the second game to take the lead with a huge four-run seventh inning. SUNY Canton had chipped away at the Red Dragons lead with two runs in the top of the sixth inning off a two-run single through the ride side by junior Allie Gibson (North Tonawanda, N.Y.). Oneonta answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to retake a three-run advantage.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Roos took their first lead of the afternoon surging ahead 6-5 when junior Nicole Mulieri (Afton, N.Y.) ripped an RBI-double through the left side followed by an RBI-groundout by senior Amanda Bitting (Stillwater, N.Y.) and a two-run double to left centerfield by junior Andrea Rogers (Munnsville, N.Y.).
Oneonta tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and then won the contest when Kalyn Deso smacked a double to right centerfield plating that plated the game-winning run.
Mulieri and Rogers each finished 2-for-4, and senior Tina DeLuca (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) allowed six earned runs on 17 hits with one strikeout in 7 1/3 innings.
In game one, the Roos were held to just a single from Mulieri, and Gibson surrendered five earned runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts on the mound.
The Roos are next in action on Thursday, April 11 in a doubleheader at Morrisville State College.
