Alfred, NY – Kelsey Morgan (Central Square, NY) tossed a one-hit shutout as the SUNY Canton softball team split a pair of games against host Alfred State College on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers (5-17) took the opener 4-2, before the Roos (7-11) dominated the nightcap 10-0.
Game 1
The hosts got on the board first with one unearned run in the bottom of the first. The Roos answered back as Morgan scored Shannon Dowling (Oneida, NY) on an RBI ground out to second.
The Pioneers rounded out their scoring for the game with three runs in the second. The first run came across on a double steal and two more runs scored on a pair of SUNY Canton errors.
SUNY Canton added another run in the fifth as Kristyn Reynolds (Malone, NY) scored Morgan Wicks (Hartford, NY) on a ground out to shortstop. Annie Sharlow (Malone, NY) did not surrender a single earned run in six innings of work on the mound. She struck out seven and gave up three free passes.
Game 2
The Roos controlled the nightcap behind solid pitching and exploded for 10 runs in the third and fourth innings. Morgan struck out eight batters giving up just a single hit and two walks in five innings of work.
Dowling led the way offensively going a perfect 3-for-3, while Stefanie Miller (Latham, NY) drove in three runs on two hits. Stephanie LaValley (Champlain, NY) finished with two runs, two hits and 2 RBIs, while Kaleigh Foran (Fort Ann, NY) also had a multi-hit game.
SUNY Canton finished with five doubles in the game as LaValley recorded two and Foran, Miller and Reynolds tallied one each.
These two teams will meet again on Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
