(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s and women’s soccer teams, both ranked 16th in the USCAA, head to Maine this weekend to battle the top-ranked teams in the University of Maine at Fort Kent, while also taking on the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
On the men’s side, the Roos are fresh off an undefeated six-game home stand; their most recent victory coming in the form of a 5-0 shutout Wednesday night against Morrisville State College on International Roo-Vuzlea Night. They’ll look to team leading scorers Shane Powell (Yonkers, N.Y.), Francisco Cardillo (Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Kevaughn John ( Arima, Trinidad & Tobago) for offensive support while relying on the commanding defensive presence of junior goalie Sankung Sillah (Bronx, N.Y.) and defenders Matthew Wong (Coventry, England) and co-captain Ricardo Whitely (Bronx, N.Y.).
Powell has struck for a team-high eight goals and along with one assist has a team-leading 17 points. Cardillo and John each have four goals and three assists for 11 points. Sillah has recorded four shutouts this year and is stopping 76 percent of the shots he faces and the Roos’ backline has posted seven shutouts overall and are holding teams to two goals per game.
On the women’s side, captain Bailey Allen (DeKalb Junction, N.Y.), the Roos leading scorer, and sophomore Melissa Campoverde (Forest Hills, N.Y.) will be called on to lead the team offensively, while defender Chelsea Allen (Marcellus, N.Y.) will look to continue her strong performance in the backfield along with freshmen backs Julia Gilbert (Phoenix, N.Y.) and Katy Sofranko (Lafayette, N.Y.).
Bailey Allen has scored nine points this year on four goals and one assist. Campoverde has three goals and one assist for seven points, and Dominique Pallotolo (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Kaylee O’Donnell (Dekalb Junction, N.Y.) each have two goals and one assist for five points apiece. Holli-Jo Cota (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) leads the SUNY Canton goaltending contingent with a 2.20 goals-against average.
Saturday’s games at Fort Kent are scheduled to start at 12 p.m. with the women, followed by the men’s game at 2 p.m. The women play first again on Sunday with an 11 a.m. match against Presque Isle and the men kickoff at 1 p.m.
