(Winchendon, Mass.)- The SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team skated to a 3-1 win over Franklin Pierce University Friday night at the J. Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon, Mass.

The Roos improved to 3-5 overall and are 3-2 against Division II opponents this season.

SUNY Canton pumped in three straight goals Friday night after falling behind 1-0 when the Ravens scored a power play goal at the 11:12 mark of the first period.

That lead would be short-lived as the Roos struck with a power play tally of their own at the 15:51 mark to tie the game 1-1. Sophomore Greg Kmiotek (Binghamton, N.Y.) took a shot from the right circle that was stopped by Ravens goalie Pat Dunn, but freshman Nils Semjonovs (Liepaja, Latvia) stuffed home the rebound for his second goal of the year and first career power play goal. Freshman Vance Bridgman (North Pole, Alaska) also assisted on the goal.

The Roos then took the lead and opened a 3-1 advantage with a pair of goals 2:14 apart in the second period. At the 11:24 mark, senior Corey Frizell (Orleans, Ontario) and Bridgman set up senior John Payne (Port Moody, B.C.) for his team-leading fourth goal and eventual game-winner from the bottom of the left circle. Bridgman capped off the scoring at the 13:38 mark with a power play goal, deflecting a shot from junior Cory Giczewski (Fountain Valley, Calif.) from the right point. Frizell picked up his second assist on the goal.

Sophomore goalie Morgan Barr (Almonte, Ontario) stopped 34 of 35 shots to improve to 2-2 while Dunn finished with 25 saves for Franklin Pierce.

The two team face each other again on Saturday at 3 p.m. to wrap up the two-game series.
