(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton baseball team rallied to top St. Joseph’s College 9-8 in game one to earn their fourth straight win on Senior Day Saturday afternoon in Canton. The Bears came back to post a 3-1 win in the nightcap to come away with the split.

In between games, seniors Tom Darling (Oswego, N.Y.), Michael Zelyez (Brasher Falls, N.Y.), Gerardo Torres (Theresa, N.Y.), and Zach Rosenthal (Miamia, Fla.) were recognized and honored.

It appeared the Bears would put a damper on the festivities as they surged ahead 8-3 plating four runs in the top of the fifth. But SUNY Canton (11-20) had other plans as they came back with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, thanks in large part to a huge hit by freshman Kyle Sacks (Clifton, N.Y.), who entered as a pinch hitter with the bases load, and promptly delivered a sharp shot to deep center that cleared the bases and pulled the Roos to within 8-6. Zelyez than stroked a single to right that brought in Sacks and made it a one-run game after five innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, Torres drew a lead-off walk, stole second and eventually ended up on third on a wild pitch. Freshman Kevin Hill (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) then scored Torres with a single to center to deadlock the game 8-8. That tie was quickly broken in the Roos next at-bat when junior Nick Belile (Norwood, N.Y.) ripped a double to center and Hill came all the way around to score the game-winning run. SUNY Canton forced the Bears into three straight out to end the game in the top of the seventh.

Freshman Luis Ramirez (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) blasted a solo home run to center for SUNY Canton, and freshman Khalil Bratton (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) earned his second win as he struck out four batters over seven innings and allowed eight hits and three walks.

Kevin Diaz and Mike Cundari each doubled to lead the Bears. Matt Brigando allowed eight hit with three strikeouts in five innings, and Chris Vargas absorbed the loss giving up two runs on two hits with one strikeout in one inning.

In the second game, Zelyez led off the bottom of the first with a triple down the right field line, and scored on an RBI-groundout by Torres for the Roos lone run.

Sophomore James Amelotte (Cornwall, Ontario) had five strikeouts and surrendered five hits and two walks in seven innings. Sacks, junior Jordan Hunneyman (Redwood, N.Y.) and freshman Braden Giffin (Lake Worth, Fla.) each added a single for SUNY Canton.

Diaz smacked his second double of the afternoon for St. Joseph’s, and Chris Cutrone recorded the win fanning two batters and giving up four hits and one walk in seven innings.

The Roos return to the diamond on Sunday when they travel to Buffalo to face D’Youville College in a doubleheader.
