Roos baseball outlasts Alma College in Florida

(Winter Haven, Fla.)- The SUNY Canton baseball team survived a wild game with Alma College to post their first win of the season, outlasting the Scots 15-10 at Chain of Lakes Park Field #1 in Winter Haven, Fla.

Both teams combined for 25 runs on 33 hits in Thursday afternoon’s contest. SUNY Canton had eight players record at least one hit, six players register at least one RBI, and four players with at least two RBIs. The Roos led 6-3 after two innings, 9-5 after four innings, and then outscored Alma 6-5 in the final three innings to pull out the victory.

Freshman Eddy Morel (Lake Worth, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with three runs, three walks and two RBIs. Senior Tom Darling (Oswego, N.Y.) also went 2-for-3 with a triple, three runs, two walks and two RBIs. Junior Jordan Hunneyman (Redwood, N.Y.) smacked a double, drove in two runs and scored twice. Senior Gerardo Torres (Theresa, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs, and freshman Braden Giffen (Lake Worth, Fla.) stroked three singles, scored twice and drove in one run.

Sophomore James Amelotte (Cornwall, Ontario) struck out five batters in 6 1/3 innings and allowed nine runs and two walks. Junior Alex LaFountain (Keesville, N.Y.) came on in relief and recorded the win as he fanned four batters while surrendering just one hit and two walks in 2 2/3 innings.

The Roos posted three runs in both the first, third and eight innings. In the first, SUNY Canton scored twice on an Alma error and an RBI-single from sophomore Luis Ramirez (Gurabo, Puerto Rico). In the third inning, the Roos were the recipient of another run off a Scots error, plus an RBI-double from Hunneyman and an RBI-single from Giffen. In the eighth, Torres ripped a two-run triple and Morel added an RBI-single.

The Roos have two more games on their spring training trip, starting on Friday against Hannibal-LaGrange College at 10:30 a.m. at Lake Myrtle Park Field #4 at 10:30 a.m. They’ll wrap up their trip on Saturday against Milwaukee School of Engineering at 10 a.m.
