(Fredonia, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team started their season Friday night with a road game at Fredonia State University in Western New York. The Blue Devils scored the final three goals of the game to hand the Roos a 5-2 loss.

Both teams were playing their first games of the season and for the Roos, it was the first game for first-year head coach Carl Michaelson, who was hired this fall to lead the program.

Sophomore goalie Morgan Barr (Almonte, Ontario) made 41 saves for SUNY Canton (0-1), including 19 in the first period that kept the game a 1-1 contest.

The Roos struck first at the 13:17 mark of the opening stanza when junior defenseman Cory Giczewski (Fountain Valley, Calif.) scored from sophomore forward Dave Schneider (Indianapolis, Ind.) to put the visiting team on top 1-0. Fredonia evened the score five minutes later when Jared Wynia scored the first of two Blue Devil power play goals and the score stood 1-1 after one period.

Fredonia took advantage of another Roos penalty in the second period to take their first lead of the game at the 12:41 mark when Mat Hehr netted the first of his two goals to put Fredonia up 2-1. SUNY Canton answered two minutes later when freshman forward Jordan Grimsley (Parrish, Fla.) scored his first collegiate goal from freshman forward Vance Bridgman (North Pole, Alaska) to tie the game for the final time. Fredonia scored once more in the second with 4:20 remaining and then tacked on two more goals in the third period for the final score.

SUNY Canton finished 0-for-4 on the power play and Fredonia ended the night 2-for-6. Mark Friesen started in goal for the Blue Devils and had six saves in a period and a half. Jeff Holloway played the other half of the game and had nine saves.

The Roos return to the ice next weekend when they host Division II Assumption College in a two-game series. On Friday, Oct. 26 the two teams square off at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 27 they play at 2 p.m.
