Staten Island, NY – The SUNY Canton men's soccer team scored early and received a huge effort from its goalkeeper down the stretch to tie host the College of Staten Island, 1-1, in double overtime on Sunday afternoon.

Nick Escalante (Whittier, CA) scored his sixth goal in the last two days at the 25:15 mark to put the Roos up 1-0 early. Staten Island responded less than five minutes later when Horatio Reid played a through ball to Dardan Nika who poked the ball just past Roos keeper Patrick Anunziatta (Schenectady, NY).

Play was extremely even on both sides with SUNY Canton holding a slight 16-15 shots advantage. Both defenses proved to be strong as each team managed just four shots on goal apiece in 110 minutes of play. Staten Island (6-7-1) produced six corner kicks compared to three for the Roos (6-3-1).

Anunziatta made three crucial saves, all of which came in the overtime periods. Staten Island had a late chance with a penalty shot off the foot of Peter Hanna with less than four minutes remaining in the second overtime but could not convert.

Escalante had two shots on goal, while Hunter Mowery (Elizabethtown, NY) had the other shot on target. Freshman Prince Adu Gyamfi had a strong game controlling the midfield for the Roos. Filippo Baruffaldi and John Gioeli combined to make three saves for Staten Island.

The men's soccer team is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to take on the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at 4 p.m.
