(Canton, N.Y.)- For one night the World Cup made an appearance in the North Country as the SUNY Canton men’s soccer team celebrated International Roo-Vuzela night with a 5-0 win over Morrisville State College before a packed crowd of horn-blowing fans.

Wednesday’s game celebrated the many international students not only on the men’s team but throughout the student body at SUNY Canton. Fans in attendance were given Vuvuzelas, the wildly popular plastic horns made famous at soccer matches around the world. And from the opening whistle to the final seconds there was a steady stream of horn-blowing, a sound similar to a large gaggle of geese descending on the field.

The Roos (9-5-1) didn’t disappoint the large crowd as they ran their winning streak to six straight games with yet another textbook display of crisp passing and suffocating defense. The Roos fired 17 shots at the Mustangs and 12 of them were on goal. At the other end the Roos limited Morrisville to just six shots in posting their fourth shutout in their last six outings and seventh overall this fall.

The game remained scoreless for the first 30 minutes before the floodgates began to open for the Roos. In the 31st minute Shane Powell (Yonkers, N.Y.) struck for his team-leading eighth goal off an assist from Austin Johnston (Auburn, N.Y.). Just a minute later Kevaughn John (Arima, Trinidad and Tobago) scored his first of two tallies on the night from Eric Lopez (Holbrook, N.Y.). John connected again with 1:23 left in the first half, this time from Ashley Butterworth (Broughton, Preston, United Kingdom) and the score was 3-0in favor of the home team at halftime.

In the 70th minute Leroy White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal from Lopez and Abdulai Jagana (Bronx, N.Y.) completed the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 74th minute.

Sankung Sillah (Bronx, N.Y.) made one save for the Roos in 75 minutes of action and Antonio James (Jamaica), making his first appearance in goal this season, played the final 15 minutes of the contest and was not called on to make a save.

Shane Sullivan (6 saves) and Trevor Goldstein (1 save) combined in net for the Mustangs who dropped to 1-5-3 overall.

The Roos hit the road this weekend for a trip to Northern Maine where they’ll play the University of Maine at Fort Kent on Saturday and the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Sunday.
