Canton, NY – Josh Geller posted two goals and an assist and Edward Malinoski, Jr. and Kyle Smith tallied a goal and assist each as the SUNY Canton men's soccer team earned a 6-0 win v. Northern Vermont University-Lyndon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Senior Day on Saturday.
Geller opened the scoring in the 27th minute redirecting a Kevin Velasquez free kick past Lyndon keeper Dennis Farnham III at the near post. Geller doubled the Roos lead 13 minutes later when he weaved through the Hornet defense finishing inside the left post. SUNY Canton outshot Lyndon 18-0 and 5-0 on goal taking a 2-0 lead into intermission.
The Roos (7-6-2, 4-1-0 NAC) extended the lead to three early in the second half off a Hornet goal kick when Smith headed a pass in to Malinoski who placed a shot past the charging Farnham. Canton's prettiest goal of the game came in the 70th minute when Malinoski played a cross from left to right and Justin Gardner back-heeled the ball to Will Austin whose shot hit went bar-down off the cross bar for his first collegiate goal.
Kyle Smith made it 5-0 in the 77th minute when he headed a pass from Geller's free kick off the left post and in. Ellis Sanchez completed the scoring seven minutes later when Kingsley Owusu found the head of Connor Bruyn who played Sanchez in on a breakaway as he finished far post.
Mouhammed Thiam and Tyelr Petersen combined for the shutout with Thiam playing the first 65 minutes and Petersen finishing the final 25. Neither keeper faced a shot on goal on the afternoon. Farnham III made three stops for the Hornets (1-11-0, 1-4-0 NAC).
The Roos honored their six graduating players: Edward Malinoski, Jr., Kyle Smith, Mouhammed Thiam, Josh Geller, Austin Brault and Kevin Velasquez in a pregame ceremony on Senior Day.
