Canton, NY – Sophomore Kyle Smith (Evans Mills, NY) scored on a one-time volley into the right corner of the net 1:46 into the second overtime to lift the SUNY Canton men's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 win against visiting Elmira College on Tuesday evening.

After Josh Geller (Monroe, NY) collected a loose ball on the far sideline he found Smith in the middle who quickly volleyed a shot into the top right corner before the Soaring Eagle defense could converge. The goal is the second of the season for the Evans Mills native.

Smith had the first great scoring opportunity 15 minutes in when Tyler Cook (Antwerp, NY) found Marc Ramirez (La Puente, CA) with a great ball up the left side. Ramirez crossed the ball to the top of the box and a cutting Smith who had a great look but his shot sailed high.

Elmira (4-7-1) responded with an opportunity 12 minutes later off a Tony Barraco corner but a Rodney Smith header went wide left. Mouhamadou Cisse (Sacre Coeur, Dakar, Senegal) had a couple early looks, one off a direct kick and the other on a one-timer from just outside the box that was saved by Soaring Eagle keeper Haruka Okamoto. The teams went into intermission scoreless but the Roos held an edge in shots (10-3) and shots on goal (3-0).

The Roos (4-9-1) broke through in the 53rd minute when Cisse headed home his sixth goal of the season into the left corner of goal off a corner kick from Smith. The Soaring Eagles evened the score 18 minutes later when Andrew Spitznogle delivered a pass to Barraco who fired a long shot that eluded Roo keeper Mouhammed Thiam (New York, NY) to knot the game at one.

SUNY Canton nearly took the lead with 10 minutes remaining but a Justin Gardner (Dix Hills, NY) header went just wide of the left post. The Soaring Eagles nearly took their first lead of the game in the 87th minute when Donte Donegal saw his shot strike the outside of the left post on a quick attack off a goal kick. The Roos quickly responded but Smith's attempt from 20 yards out missed just wide right.

After 90 minutes of play the teams headed to overtime tied at one. SUNY Canton held the upper hand in shots (18-8) and shots on goal (7-2).

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first 10 minute extra session despite three shots from the Roos. SUNY Canton would find the game-winner from Smith 1:46 into the second OT off the pass from Geller to earn the thrilling sudden-death victory.

Thiam made one save in his fourth victory of the season for the Roos. Okamoto made two saves in the opening half before Jordan Hodlofski turned aside three shots after halftime for Elmira.

The men's soccer team returns to the pitch on Sunday when it hosts Castleton at 2 p.m.
