LYNDON CENTER, Vt. -- Sophomore Abdulai Jagana (Bronx, N.Y.) scored at 4:07 of the first half and it turned out to be the game-winner as the SUNY Canton men’s soccer team defeated Lyndon State 1-0 in a non-conference match Sunday afternoon in Vermont.

With the victory the Roos, ranked 18th in the USCAA Coaches Poll, improved to 4-6-1 on the season overall while the Hornets drop to 3-9.

SUNY Canton came out strong and managed to score the lone goal of the contest on a mistake by the Lyndon defense. Jagana split two Hornet defenders on the play and sent a hard shot straight at Lyndon goalkeeper Jason Gray.

Gray made the initial save and appeared to be in control of the ball, but a collision with teammate Youl Herjok jarred the ball loose allowing Jagana to pounce on the free ball and punch it into the back of the net.

From there, Roos goalie, freshman William Banahene (Rochester, N.Y.) made the lead stand, making five saves in the contest to earn the shutout. Gray stopped 11 shots in the loss as the Roos outshot Lyndon by a margin of 22-15.

The Roos return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 10 with a road game at Morrisville State College at 7 p.m.
