(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s soccer team broke a scoreless first half with a five-goal outburst in the final 45 minutes en route to a 5-0 shutout of Green Mountain College on Saturday in Canton.
Both teams played to a 0-0 draw through the first 45 minutes that was delayed for a while after a severe storm with heavy rain and high winds whipped through the North Country. Play resumed with 22 minutes left and after a brief halftime the Roos (1-2) quickly took control of the game.
In the 47th minute sophomore Austin Johnston (Auburn, N.Y.) gathered in a pass from junior Keelon Joseph (Malabar, Arima, Trinidad) and fired a point-blank shot past Eagles’ goalie Nate Kishbaugh for what would turn out to be the game-winning goal.
Sophomore Eric Lopez (Holbrook, N.Y.) made it 2-0 with a nifty goal in the 58th minute. Lopez carried the ball along the right wing, made a nice crossover move to get by a defender and fired in a hard shot off his left foot that curled into the left side of the net. Johnston made it 3-0 in the 72nd minute when he headed home a pass from Marvin Palmer (Brooklyn, N.Y.) for his second score of the day.
The Roos final two goals came in a one-minute span late in the half thanks to sophomores Abdulai Jagana (Bronx, N.Y.) and Elhadji Gueye (New York, N.Y.). Gueye set up Jagana for his second goal of the year in the 81st minute and then Jagana returned the favor feeding Gueye for his first goal in the 82nd minute.
Sophomore Antonio James (Black River, St. Elizabeth) and freshman William Banahene (Rochester, N.Y.) combined on the shutout for the Roos as neither goalie was called on to make a save as the Roos outshot the Eagles 13-0. SUNY Canton also took 11 corner kicks to just one for Green Mountain (0-3).
Kishbaugh finished with one save and Toliver DiMasi had two in relief.
The Roos are next in action next Saturday, Sept. 15 when they travel to New England College in New Hampshire for a 2 p.m. contest.
