(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s lacrosse team lost to Castleton State College 18-5 on a cold and blustery Saturday in Canton.
Fierce winds along with snow and some hail pelted both teams throughout the afternoon, and the Roos offense never seemed to get on track as they dropped to 4-5 overall and 1-2 at home. The Spartans won their sixth straight game improving to 11-3.
SUNY Canton out shot Castleton by a 44-40 margin, but only 23 of those were on the cage and Spartans goalie Peter Latulippe stymied the Roos other good scoring chances with an 18-save performance.
Castleton scored the first four goals of the game before the Roos rallied with a pair of scores of their own from freshman Chris Gamble (Carthage, N.Y.). Gamble scored off a feed from sophomore Taylor Caswell (Potsdam, N.Y.) with 4:02 left in the opening stanza, and then struck again from senior Rob Gleason (Vestal, N.Y.) with 2:36 on the clock and the quarter ended with the Spartans lead trimmed to 4-2.
Castleton negated the Roos momentum heading into the second quarter outscoring the Roos 5-0 to lead 9-2 at halftime. SUNY Canton scored two quick goals to start the second half off the sticks of sophomore Garrett DiTullio (Potsdam, N.Y.) and Gleason, but Castleton then reeled off six unanswered goals to close the third quarter and take a 15-4 lead into the final 15 minutes. The Roos managed just one more goal from senior Patrick Connelly (Chittenango, N.Y.) with the man advantage with 10:29 left in the game. SUNY Canton finished 2-for-4 in man up situations.
Caswell ended the day with two assists. Junior Corey Spuck (Rochester, N.Y.) made nine saves through three periods, and freshman Jeff Hammond (Rensselaer Falls, N.Y.) made one save in the fourth quarter.
Spencer Hunt led the Spartans with three goals and three assists.
The Roos are back in action on Sunday facing Johnson State College at 2 p.m. on their home turf.
