Canton, NY – Robert Holliday, Jr. tied a game-high with 24 points as the SUNY Canton men's basketball team outscored visiting Maine Presque Isle by 24 after intermission in an 85-63 win in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon.

The Roos improve to 14-12 and will face No. 2 seed Husson on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the NAC semifinals. Championship weekend will be hosted by top seed Maine Farmington. This ends the Owls 2018-19 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Holliday, Jr. stuffed the stat sheet with 24 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals. Brandon Adkisson finished with 17 points and Jordan Stewart added 15 points. Andrew Fitch recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Shyquinn Dix paced the Owls with 24 points and six assists, while Griffin Guerrette (18) also scored in double figures.

The Roos led 9-5 five minutes in behind six points from Fitch. Canton extended its lead to eight but UMPI used an 8-0 run to tie the game at 13 at the under-12 media time out.

The Owls took their first lead at 20-17 following a made three from the left wing from Guerrette. UMPI led by as many as five on multiple occasions carrying a 26-21 advantage into the under-4 timeout.

The hosts battled back to get within 36-34 at intermission. Guerrette (15) and Dix (13) led the Owls in first-half scoring. Adkisson posted seven points, while Holliday, Jr. and Fitch tallied six each for Canton.

The Roos scored the first six points out of intermission to take a 40-36 lead and took their largest advantage of the game at 47-38 following a jumper from Holliday, Jr. with 15:28 to play.

UMPI used a 19-10 run to tie the game at 57-57 heading to the under-8 time out. The Roos used a 9-0 spurt out of the timeout to lead 66-57 following a Holliday, Jr. fast break bucket off a pass from Stewart with 4:37 to play.

Stewart knocked down a three to build the lead to 10 and an UMPI player was whistled for a foul after the basket as the Roos maintained possession. Adkisson knocked down a pair free throws on a 1-and-1 to extend the lead to 12 and convert a five-point possession to seal the victory.

"I am so proud of this group and the way they competed today," Head Coach Ben Thompson said. "Their effort and togetherness, coupled with their efficiency in the second half, really brought us home this win. While we are excited today, we still have work to do next weekend in the NAC Tournament. I also wanted to send a huge THANK YOU to Roo Nation who have supported us all year and were incredible again today!"

WHAT'S NEXT

The Roos will face No. 2 seed Husson in the NAC semifinals on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The semifinals and championship game will be played at top seed Maine Farmington. This ends the season for the Owls.
