(Easton, Mass.)- Sophomore J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, Pa.) scored a power play goal midway through the second period leading the SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team to a 2-1 win over Stonehill College Friday night in Massachusetts.
The Roos won their second straight game over a Division II opponent as they improved to 2-2 overall.
Freshman Nils Semjonovs (Liepaga, Latavia) put the Roos ahead 1-0 when he scored his first collegiate goal and point at the 13:48 mark of the first period off assists from sophomores Bill Ousey (Fairless Hills, Pa.) and Trevor Wight (Clearwater, Fla.). Stonehill tied the game 1-1 with a power play goal from Bill Carey four minutes into the second period.
A Stonehill player was whistled for tripping five minutes later and Lafferty and the Roos capitalized when the defenseman scored his third goal of the season from freshman Joe Casale (Niagara Falls, N.Y.).
Sophomore Morgan Barr (Almonte, Ontario) made 42 saves for SUNY Canton to earn his first victory of the season. Chris Tasiopoulos had 24 saves for Stonehill.
The two teams play again on Saturday at 6:20.
