Winchendon, MA – The SUNY Canton men's hockey team scored two goals each in the second and third periods to close out a weekend set with a 5-2 win against host Franklin Pierce University on Saturday evening. The win was the second in as many nights for the Roos (7-12-1).

The Roos got on the board first at the 2:42 mark of the opening period on Nick Vasilopoulos' (Montreal, QC) seventh goal of the season. SUNY Canton cycled the puck into the left-wing corner. Tyler Ralph (Middletown, NJ) picked it up and carried it into the circle slipping a perfect pass through to Vasilopoulos at the right post who put it home. Thomas Crabtree (Knoxville, TN) also earned a helper on the play.

Franklin Pierce (3-15-0) evened the score at one at the 8:55 mark on an unassisted tally from Connor Mauro. The Roos looked to pass the puck point-to-point in the offensive zone and Mauro made a terrific play knocking the puck out of mid-air to spring him in on the breakaway. The Ravens took their first lead of the game with 1:56 left in the period on the power play as Evan Marek put the puck on net as it slid through the five-hole of Roo goaltender Louie Puig (Chicago, IL). The hosts led 2-1 after one.

The Roos used a pair of second period goals to take a 3-2 lead after two. Josh Sova (Oswego, NY) led the rush into the zone 2-on-2 and left it for George Curry (Schaumburg, IL) who slotted his seventh of the season at the 5:17 mark. SUNY Canton extended its lead to two midway through the period when Eric Witzel (Ottawa, ON) lit the lamp for his team-leading seventh time. He walked it in from the left-wing side burying it in the back of the net. Ben Beasley (Burlington, ON) and Brett Costello (Lombardy, ON) earned helpers on the play.

SUNY Canton tacked on two insurance goals in the final frame. At 9:55 in a 5-on-3 situation Brandon McMartin (Toronto, ON) played a cross-ice pass from the right point to Costello at the left circle who put it home top shelf. Four minutes later Dave Schneider (Indianapolis, IN) rushed the puck into the zone at the left-wing and found Witzel with a cross-slot pass who one-timed it into the back of the net at the left post.

Puig made 23 saves to up his season record to 4-3-0, while Tom McGuckln made 30 saves for the Ravens.

The men's hockey team is back in action on Friday when it visits SUNY Cortland for a weekend set. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.
