(Canton, N.Y.)- Freshman forward George Curry (Schaumburg, Ill.) scored a power play goal with 13 seconds left in overtime propelling the SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team to a thrilling 4-3 win over Lebanon Valley College Saturday afternoon at Roos House in Canton.

The Roos swept the two-game series with the Flying Dutchmen for the second straight year as SUNY Canton improved to 7-13 overall.

The extra five minutes provided several dramatic moments as both teams had terrific chances to end the contest. One minute into overtime, Lebanon Valley had a great opportunity out in front of the Roos goal that was stymied by sophomore Morgan Barr (Almonte, Ontario). Two minutes later, the Flying Dutchmen had another chance that rang off the right post and into the corner. The Roos countered on their next shift when freshman Vance Bridgman (North Pole, Alaska) circled inside the blue line on the left side and flipped a quick shot that was stopped on a slick glove save from Lebanon Valley goalie Matt Healy, who had an outstanding afternoon with 50 saves.

With the game winding down, the Flying Dutchmen were whistled for a hooking penalty with 1:21, and that penalty eventually led to the game-winning goal. Sophomore Austin Root (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) drew the infraction when he had made a nice rush down the left wing and was pulled down from behind for a hooking penalty. Sophomore J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, N.J.) had two great shots on goal to start the power play that were turned aside by Healy, and Lebanon Valley countered with two short-handed shots that were both stopped by Barr at close range. On the next play, the Roos carried the puck the length of the ice and junior defenseman Cory Giczewski (Fountain Valley, Calif.) slid a beautiful pass across the slot to Curry, who knocked in his third goal of the year and first career game-winner.

The game was tied 1-1 after one period, despite the Roos outshooting Lebanon Valley 24-7 in the opening stanza. The Flying Dutchmen scored the lone goal of the second period to take a 2-1 lead into the third period.

Freshman Nils Semjonovs (Liepja, Latvia) tied the game 2-2 scoring at the 3:56 mark of the third period. Lebanon Valley went back ahead 3-2 when Klayton Garman scored his second goal of the game at the 11:52 mark. Senior Corey Frizell (Orleans, Ontario) then forced overtime when he tallied his first goal of the season following a rebound by an initial shot from sophomore Dave Schneider (Indianapolis, Ind.)

Freshmen Jake Ranahan (Grapevine, Texas) provided the Roos first-period goal and Barr notched his fourth win finishing with 21 saves. SUNY Canton dominated Lebanon Valley in shots with a 54-24 advantage.

The Roos are next in action on Feb. 2 when they travel to SUNY Geneseo.
