Roos men’s basketball uses scorching second half to down Mustangs, 79-61

Morrisville, NY – The SUNY Canton men's basketball team used a 23-0 run in the second half to complete an impressive come-from-behind 79-61 victory against host Morrisville State College on Wednesday evening.

After trailing 40-32 at intermission SUNY Canton (10-1) outscored the Mustangs (6-4) 39-8 over the first 14 minutes of the second half including a 23-0 run over 7:47 of clock time. Tied at 48 apiece with 14:03 remaining the Roos began the spurt with a three-pointer from Sam Annorh (Queens, NY). Five different players scored during the stretch for SUNY Canton as they buried three-pointers on four consecutive possessions, while locking down defensively to open up a 71-48 advantage.

Morrisville would never get closer than 16 the remainder of the way as SUNY Canton completed the impressive comeback. SUNY Canton shot 54 percent from the field in the second half including a 50 percent mark (7-for-14) from long distance led by a 3-for-4 effort from Walt Jeter (Fort Drum, NY). Meanwhile, the Roos held the hosts to just 31 percent shooting after intermission.

The Mustangs opened and early 4-0 lead and after three ties the Roos gained their first lead of the contest 7:24 in after a made jumper from Annorh. Morrisville regained the lead after a three-pointer from Chris DeJean, a lead they did not relinquish the remainder of the opening half.

SUNY Canton got the lead within two at 29-27 after Adrian Williams (Brooklyn, NY) hit a pair of free throws but the Mustangs closed the final 2:37 of the half on an 11-5 run to take a 40-32 lead into intermission. Annorh led the Roos with 14 points in the opening half, while Romario Fletcher (Queens, NY) added seven.

Morrisville shot 40 percent from three-point land (4-for-10) in the opening 20 minutes, while the Roos hit on just seven percent of their long balls (1-for-13).

Annorh and Fletcher finished with game-highs of 17 points, while Fletcher added 14 rebounds and four steals for his third double-double of the season. Jeter posted a career-high 15 points and added seven rebounds on 5-for-9 shooting including a 4-for-6 mark from behind the arc.

Kam Peterkin (Harlem, NY) chipped in seven points, while Matt Spencer (Gouverneur, NY) and Rashad Richardson (Rochester, NY) added six points apiece. The Roos dominated rebounding 49-34 including an 18-11 mark on the offensive glass, which led to a 21-4 advantage in second chance points. SUNY Canton also held the upper hand in points in the paint (34-22) and steals (10-5).

Joe Hulbert paced the Mustangs with 16 points, while Qwuhail Barlow added 10 in the scoring column.

The men's basketball team has a week off before it hosts Wells College next Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the Roos House.
