Roos men's basketball uses balance and strong defense to down Bengals

Montreal, QUE – The SUNY Canton men's basketball team used a balance scoring effort combined with stifling defense to upend the University of Maine at Fort Kent, 69-52, in the Martin Luther King Classic in Montreal on Saturday.

Five Roos scored nine or more points headline by a season-high 17 points from Romario Fletcher (Queens, NY). The freshman shot 8-for-9 from the field and picked up three steals. Khalil Bratton (Queens, NY) finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, his second double-double of the season.

Tyler Ellison (New York, NY) tallied 12 points and six boards, while Sam Annorh (Queens, NY) posted 11 points, nine assists and four steals. Scott Bartenstein (Potsdam, NY) pumped in nine points going 3-for-7 from downtown.

With the game tied at 9-9 early the Roos used a 10-0 run that started and finished with treys from Bartenstein to open up a 19-9 advantage. SUNY Canton would lead by as any as 13 taking a 34-24 advantage into halftime.

The Roos used a 14- 4 spurt the first 5:30 out of intermission to open up a 20 point edge at 48-28. Maine Fort Kent trimmed the lead to as few as eight but SUNY Canton responded cruising to the 69-52 victory.

SUNY Canton shot 41 percent from the field while its defensive put up a tremendous effort holding the Bengals to just 28 percent shooting in the game. Jeremy Bishop (17) and Nikola Vukosavovic (12) were the only scorers in double figures for Maine Fort Kent.

The men's basketball team is back in action Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. when it travels to Troy, NY to take on the Sage Colleges.
