(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s hockey team applied suffocating offensive pressure from the opening whistle to the final buzzer in Friday night’s 9-1 win over the St. Bonaventure University Bonnies to open the season 5-0.

Head Coach Eric McCambly summed up the Roos offensive production so far this season with one word: surprising. “The goal is to keep an up-tempo pressure,” McCambly said. “When we run the systems it leads to turnovers and offensive opportunities, so it’s good to see that our guys are taking advantage and putting the puck in the net.”

Senior forward Dan Cibelli (Liverpool, N.Y.) opened the scoring at 7:33 of the first period catching St. Bonaventure goalie Joshua Popsie out of position and tucking a rebound into a wide open net. Just over a minute later, junior Chris Giczewski (Fountain Valley, Cali.) scored his first of three goals sliding a pass from Cibelli along the ice past Popsie on the short side. Gizewski then closed out the scoring in the first banking a shot off Popsie’s pads from behind the red line at 19:54.

The Roos added two more goals in the second, the first came at 4:13 off the stick of freshman forward Trevor Wight (Clearwater, Fla.) as he lifted the puck far post after a scramble off the initial shot from Greg Kmiotek (Binghampton, N.Y.) left Popsie down on the ice. Roos Captain John Payne (Port Moody, B.C) notched the fifth goal sending a wrist-shot over the right shoulder of Popsie at 6:29 for his 97th career point.

The Bonnies spoiled freshman goaltender Chris Ypsilantis’s (Budd Lake, N.J.) shut-out bid when Josh Piegay took advantage of a neutral zone turnover and buried a breakaway shot at 11:54.

But the Roos kept the pressure on in the third period. Giczewski tipped a pass from freshman Thomas Freeman (Rancho Cucamonga, Cali.) past Popsie glove side at 3:55 for the hat trick extending the Roos lead to 6-1. Freshman Dave Schneider (Indianapolis, Ind.) tallied the Roos seventh goal on the night sending a rebound from a J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, N.J.) slap shot under the pads of the Bonnies sprawling goaltender as he fell to the ice at 7:56.

Wight buried his second of the night when he redirected sophomore Eric Richard’s (St-Hubert, Quebec) shot from the point past Popsie at 10:32 to make the score 8-1. To close out the scoring, assistant captain Darren Camp (Canton, N.Y.) set up freshman Bill Ousey (Fairless Hills, Pa.) with a well-placed pass from the left faceoff dot which Ousey redirected glove side at 18:21.

Popsie made 47 saves in net for the Bonnies, while Ypsilantis stopped 8 shots for the Roos.

The teams face off again Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
