(Rochester, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team used a five-goal outburst in the first period to cruise past the University of Rochester 8-3 Sunday afternoon in Rochester.

The 11th-ranked Roos improved to 21-2-3 overall and 5-2 in the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League.

The Roos pounced on the Yellowjackets early when freshman defenseman J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, N.J.) scored just 1:20 into the opening period. Freshman defenseman Sean Gallagher (Sandwich, Mass.) scored two minutes later and then senior forward Dan Cibelli (Liverpool, N.Y.) scored two of his three goals in the game sandwiched around a goal from sophomore defenseman Terry Bradford (Londonderry, N.H.) and the score was 5-0 in favor of the visitor’s after one period.

Freshman Jacob McCombs (Sandwich, Mass.) stretched the lead to 6-0 scoring his first goal a mere 13 seconds into the second stanza. Rochester got two goals back at the 19:26 and 9:11 mark before sophomore forward Eric Richard (St-Hubert, Quebec) closed out the period with a goal with 1:53 left and the Roos held a five-goal advantage heading into the final period.

Both teams traded goals in the final 20 minutes as Cibelli completed his hat trick with his third goal with 5:22 left on the clock.

Cibelli, Gallagher and Lafferty each added an assist. Junior forward Corey Frizell (Orleans, Ontario) and freshman forward Thomas Freeman (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) each contributed three assists, senior defenseman A.J. Royce (Somers, Conn.) had two and freshman goalie Lorne Shotwell (Lewiston, N.Y.) made four saves.

Nick Fedorka had a goal and an assist for Rochester and Ryan Siggurdson had 40 saves.

The Roos return home for the first time since winning the Terry Martin / Alumni Classic on Nov. 19 when they host Canisius College on Friday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
