(Canton, N.Y.)- Freshman defenseman J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, N.J.) scored on a wrist shot 1:32 into overtime propelling the SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team past St. Bonaventure University 7-6 in Canton.

After the Bonnies cleared their own defensive zone early in the extra session, the Roos pushed the puck quickly back up ice to the stick of Thomas Freeman (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.). The freshman forward skated over the blue line along the left boards and sent a perfect pass to Lafferty who took one stride to the high slot and wristed a hard shot past Bonnies goalie Greg Lioy for the game-winner.

The Roos fought off a spirited effort by the Bonnies and especially Lioy who finished the game with 57 saves as SUNY Canton dominated the shots category 64-21 but struggled to put the puck in the net.

The score was tied after the first period at 1-1 despite the Roos holding an 18-6 advantage in shots. It looked the Roos were on the path to another blowout victory when sophomore forward Eric Richard (St-Hubert, Quebec) scored just 1:03 into the opening period. The Roos had numerous scoring opportunities throughout the first 20 minutes but either missed the net, rang the posts or had shots stopped by Lioy. The Bonnies tied the game midway through the period when Taylor Rosenberg scored a power play goal, one of four for St. Bonaventure in the game.

The Roos scored two quick goals to open a 3-1 advantage six minutes into the second period. Trevor Wight (Clearwater, Fla.) backhanded a loose puck into the net that had trickled out to the left faceoff circle at the 6:04 mark and then on the next shift Lafferty scored his first of three goals. Lafferty scored again at the 10:16 mark before the Bonnies scored a pair of quick goals from Pat Goodspeed a minute apart to make the score 4-3. Freeman and Isaiah Patterson (Potsdam, N.Y.) scored the Roos final two goals in the period and the score was 6-4 heading into the third period.

Things started to unravel for SUNY Canton in the third as they were whistled for eight penalties and were forced on two separate occasions to kill off a five-on-three advantage. The Bonnies scored twice in the final period to deadlock the game at 6-6. The Roos did play the final 1:35 of the third period and 25 seconds of overtime on the power play and again generated several terrific scoring chances but just couldn’t get the puck to cross the line until Lafferty ended the game with his third goal.

Freeman finished with one goal and three assists. Chris Giczewski (Fountain Valley, Calif.), who netted three goals in Friday night’s 9-1 win, had three assists and Bill Ousey (Fairless Hills, Pa.) added two assists.

Lorne Shotwell (Lewiston, N.Y.) earned his first career win with 15 saves.

The Roos will Drexel University next Friday, Oct. 21 and Sat. Oct. 22.
