(Riverdale, N.Y.)- Junior guard Khalid Vaughn (New York, N.Y.) exploded for a career-high 33 points leading the SUNY Canton men’s basketball team to an 86-64 win over Penn State-Lehigh Valley in the consolation game of the Mount Saint Vincent Tip-Off Tournament in Riverdale, N.Y.
Vaughn, who was named to the all-tournament team, also snagged 13 rebounds for the double-double and added two steals to give first-year head coach Jim Bechtel his first win with SUNY Canton. The Roos shot 42 percent from the floor, including a 45-percent effort in the first half that staked them to a 44-29 halftime lead. Penn State scored the first five points of the contest before the Roos slowly took command of the game. The Roos trailed 11-10 with 15:02 left when sophomore Xavier Fisher (Plymouth, Pa.) drilled a 3-pointer that ignited a staggering 28-8 run over the next 11 minutes and opened a 38-18 SUNY Canton advantage.
The Roos were able to maintain a double-digit lead for all of the second half and led by as many as 27 points (86-59) with just over two minutes remaining. Penn State sank four free throws in the final 1:27 for the final margin.
Vaughn shot 7-for-9 and scored 18 of his points in the first half and finished his stellar outing shooting 14-for-19 overall and 4-for-6 from the free throw line. Fisher also reached double figures with 15 points and notched a double-double grabbing 14 rebounds to go along with three steals and three blocks. Freshman Michael Pulci (Staten Island, N.Y.) added eight points and three assists and sophomore Tyler Ellison (New York, N.Y.) had 10 rebounds and seven points.
Lloyd Irons led Penn State with 21 points and 12 rebounds and Steven Reeves added 15 points and three boards.
The Roos are next in on action on Tuesday, Nov. 20 when they travel to Johnson State College in Vermont for a 5 p.m. game.
