(Canton, N.Y.)- Junior Allie Gibson (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) tied a season-high with nine strikeouts, guiding the SUNY Canton women’s softball team to a 6-1 win over Fisher College on Saturday.
Both teams had to battle bitter winds and occasional snow and hail on a cold day in the North Country. Gibson held the Falcons to just four singles and four walks over seven innings to earn her third win of the year, and help the Roos beat the Falcons for the third time this season and improve to 11-17.
The Roos scored one run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by senior Tina DeLuca (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) and then extended their lead to 3-0 with two more runs in the third when DeLuca scored on a wild pitch and junior Andrea Rogers (Munnsville, N.Y. ) stole home. SUNY Canton posted three more runs in the fourth inning thanks to a couple of miscues by the Falcons, including an error, two wild pitches and two passed balls. Fisher got one back in the top of the fifth from an RBI-single from Jayla Vega.
Junior Nicole Mulieri (Afton, N.Y.) and freshman Sharon Cordero (Goshe, N.Y.) each smacked a double for SUNY Canton and Gibson helped her cause going 1-for-3 with a run.
Vega took the loss for the Falcons as she allowed six runs on six hits and eight walks with 10 strikeouts.
The two teams meet again on Sunday in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. in Canton.
