(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team ran their winning streak to six games as they got by Syracuse University 2-1 Friday night in Canton.

The Roos beat the Orangemen for the second time this season and improved to 26-2-3 overall.

The game was tied 1-1 with less than five minutes remaining in the second period when the Roos developed a three-on-one break from center ice. Junior Corey Frizell (Orleans, Ontario) pushed the puck ahead to senior Rob Liggio (Canton, N.Y.) along the right boards. Liggio drove to the net and slid a beautiful pass across the crease to a charging Eric Richard (St-Hubert, Quebec) who stuffed home the puck for what would turn out to be the game-winning goal.

Senior Darren Camp (Canton, N.Y.) scored the Roos other goal at the 7:46 mark of the opening period when he knocked in a rebound off a shot from in close by Frizell. Liggio picked up the other assist on Camp’s goal.

The Orangemen came back and tied the game midway through the second period after the Roos failed to clear their own end while on a power play. Christian Phelps collected the puck and blasted in a shot for a short-handed goal just inside the blue and line and seconds before being leveled by Roos’ defenseman J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, N.J.).

The Roos outshot Syracuse 36-20 as freshman Morgan Barr (Almonte, Ontario) won his 13th game for SUNY Canton and fourth in his last four starts with a 19 save effort.

Austin Lefkowicz made 34 saves for the Orangemen.

The Roos close out the regular season Saturday night hosting RIT in an ECHL contest. If the Roos beat the Tigers they’ll secure the No. 2 seed in the ECHL tournament hosted by SUNY Canton Feb. 24-26.
