Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's soccer team generated a number of quality opportunities and outshot the Mustangs on the day but visiting Morrisville State College used an early second half score to help defeat the hosts 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Roos controlled play in the opening half with a 4-1 shots edge. Karyss Terrance (Hogansburg, NY) paced the offense with three shots on goal including one from inside eight yards that was stymied by Mustang keeper Angela Marriott. Kristina DiNardo (Ottawa, ON) made a beautiful cross from the right side to set up the play. The teams went into intermission with a scoreless tie.
Morrisville got on the board first just 87 seconds out of halftime when Paris Matteo played a through ball to a cutting Krista Baxter down the left sideline. Roo keeper Alyshia Murray came charging out of goal as Baxter chipped a shot into the far right corner to give the Mustangs the lead.
The Roos continued to battle as DiNardo played a pretty through ball to Franchesca Trombley (Dekalb Junction, NY) who missed just wide. Minutes later Terrance had another strong chance from short range but Marriott was up to the challenge turning aside the strike.
Thirteen minutes into the second half Katie Lamica (Malone, NY) quickly started the Roos counterattack feeding an outlet pass to Terrance on the left wing. The junior cut back left to right and lined a shot on goal but it was right at Marriott who made the save.
The Mustangs added another tally in the 60th minute as Courtney Purcell found Jasmine Wynter at the top left of the 18. Wynter cut back and hit a low shot into the left side of the net to make it 2-0.
With just less than five minutes remaining Terrance played a beautiful ball from the left side to the far right post where Trombley headed it off the cross bar. On the ensuing corner kick Terrance found Kaleigh Foran (Fort Ann, NY) at the far post who headed the ball into the left side of the net to get SUNY Canton within one with 3:52 to play.
SUNY Canton was on the attack once again with 2:30 to play as DiNardo fed Terrance at the top of the 18 who ripped a left footed shot as Marriott made her ninth and final save of the game.
Despite tremendous offensive pressure down the stretch from the Roos the Mustangs were able to hold on for the 2-1 final. Marriott made nine huge saves in net for Morrisville, while Murray turned aside five shots in goal for SUNY Canton.
Terrance led all players with six shots on goal, while Baxter produced three for Morrisville. The Roos held a 10-7 shots on goal advantage in the contest.
The women's soccer team will travel to Marcy, NY on Wednesday for a midweek battle against SUNY Polytechnic Institute. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
