The SUNY Canton men's soccer team lost to No. 6 University of Maine at Fort Kent 5-1 Saturday in Canton.
The Roos (2-1 Sunrise Conference, 2-4 overall) accomplished something on Saturday that no other team has been able to do this year and that is score against the Bengals.
In the 18th minute Repton Abrahams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took advantage of a strong wind at his back and launched a high shot from along the right sideline that curled into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Loocken Vixama (Brooklyn, N.Y.) assisted on the goal.
The score remained close for the rest of the half thanks to several terrific stops by SUNY Canton goalie Homero Flores (Tamaulipas, Mexico) who matched a career-high with 14 saves. Flores also got some tremendous help from his defense who cleared several balls from just trickling over the goal line.
"I really thought that the score didn't reflect the game and how hard our guys worked today," said head coach Mark Howlett. "We stuck to our game plan and we did something that no other team has done so far against an outstanding team. I was really happy with the way we played today."
Andre Anderson led the Bengals with a goal and two assists and David Girouard had one save for the shutout.
The Roos will battle the University of Maine at Presque Isle Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
