Roos fall to Machias in Conference championship

(Windham, Maine)- SUNY Canton dropped a heartbreaking 56-54 decision to the University of Maine at Machias in the championship game of the Sunrise Conference women’s basketball tournament in Windham, Maine.

The No. 2  Roos had an outstanding season and they end it with a 13-10 record.  They had won eight in a row prior to Sunday and have only lost twice in their last 13 games.  The Roos also said goodbye to seniors Shannon LaFave (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) and Jackie Maynard (Brasher Falls, N.Y.) who closed out their stellar careers on Sunday.  Lafave had 14 points and six rebounds and Maynard had seven points and four rebounds.

SUNY Canton got a fast start to the game on Sunday as they raced to a 10-2 lead just five minutes into the contest and forced the No. 4 Clippers to miss their first seven field goal attempts.

After Machias trimmed the lead to a single point at 16-15 with 7:33 left in the opening half, the Roos pushed right back by way of a 10-0 spurt as four different players during that stretch.  The Roos eventually led 33-25 at halftime.

SUNY Canton fashioned another impressive run early in the second half after the Clippers had pulled within five points at 35-30.  A three-point play from Ilijana Todorovic (Banja Luka, Bosnia) started a 9-2 run that stretched the back into double digits at 44-32.

Both team cooled off over the remaining seven minutes of the game before Machias pulled out a spirited comeback in the waning minutes of the contest.  The Roos were ahead 52-49 with 1:25 on the clock but committed two straight turnovers that led to back-to-back layups from the Clippers’ Dana Houghton and Machias suddenly was in the lead.  The Roos had an answer for each run Machias had earlier in the game, but did not have an answer at the end and the Clippers held on for the win.

Todorovic finished with 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds for her second double-double of the year.   Mindy Small (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) added 10 points and five steals and Jackie Sedlacek (Endicott, N.Y.) contributed five points and six rebounds.

Kayla Wood led the Clippers with 17 points and five assists and Jamyriah McPherson added 11 points and six rebounds.
