(Kingston, R.I.)- A goal from freshman J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, N.J.) late in the second period proved to be the difference as the 14th-ranked SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team edged No. 16 University of Rhode Island 3-2 Saturday afternoon in Kingston, R.I.
The Roos stayed unbeaten moving to 16-0-3 overall after completing the two-game sweep of the Rams.
Junior Corey Frizell (Orleans, Ontario) opened the scoring for the Roos with an unassisted goal at the 8:43 mark of the first period. Rhode Island tied the game eight minutes later and it remained 1-1 after the first frame.
Frizell notched his second goal of the game five minutes into the second period on the power play off assists from Lafferty and senior Rob Liggio (Canton, N.Y.). The Rams tied the game again a short time later before Lafferty netted his second game-winning goal of the season from senior Andrew Royce (Somers, Conn.) with 3:21 left in the period.
Morgan Barr (Almonte, Ontario) picked up his seventh win of his freshman campaign stopping 28 of 30 shots and Andrew Sherman had 24 saves on 27 shots for the Rams.
SUNY Canton hits the road next weekend when they’ll compete in the Blizzard in Buffalo Tournament, which they won last season.
