Geneseo, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team put up a dominating performance to open the Geneseo Invitational on Friday, defeating host SUNY Geneseo in straight sets, 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-20).
The Roos improve to 8-4 on the season, while giving the Blue Knights (11-2) just their second loss of the season.
SUNY Canton got off to a strong start with 12 kills in the opening set, while Geneseo struggled with nine kills and 10 errors. The Roos continued to control the game with a dominating display in the second set, nearly doubling up the Blue Knights, 25-14. The hosts committed 10 more errors compared to just six kills.
The Roos had one of their best sets of the season to close out Geneseo in the third stanza, 25-20. SUNY Canton posted a remarkable 18 kills in the frame compared to just five hitting errors (.342 hitting percentage).
Overall, SUNY Canton dominated kills (43-25), errors (15-24) and hitting percentage (.264-.010). Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, ON) sparked the team offensively with 10 kills, while Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) and Morgan Bills (Walworth, NY) each put down nine balls apiece. Caitlin Grimshaw (Adams, NY) was strong on both sides of the ball with eight kills and eight digs, while Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ON) posted match-highs of 21 digs and three service aces. Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, NY) accumulated 32 assists to go with her eight digs.
The women's volleyball team is back in action on the second day of the SUNY Geneseo Tournament on Saturday. The Roos take on Oswego State at 10:00 a.m. before a 12 p.m. contest against Medaille College.
