(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women’s basketball team fell to SUNY Potsdam 56-35 on the second day of the Kevin Fee / Roos Classic in Canton on Saturday.

The tournament is named after the late Kevin Fee, a former police officer in Ogdensburg and a huge supporter of youth sports in the North Country. Fee’s wife Angela, daughter Morgan and son Chris tossed up the opening tip off before the Roos and Bears game on Saturday. Morrisville State College, coached by Ogdensburg native Sean Pinkerton, beat Bard College 60-35 in the earlier game.

Both teams struggled out of the gates on Saturday as the game was scoreless for the first four minutes. Potsdam went ahead 5-0 before the Roos tied the game following a free throw from Danielle English (Brentwood, N.Y.) and a jumper from Kaitlin Myers (Dannemora, N.Y.). The Bears surged back ahead but the Roos kept battling and tied the game once again midway through the first half at 11-11 after Corrine Riegal (Bainbridge, N.Y.) nailed a short jumper. After Potsdam opened up another five-point lead, the Roos came back again to pull within one after a layup from English and a basket from Cortney Whalen (Hammond, N.Y.). The Bears eventually took a 24-20 lead into halftime.

The game remained close to start the second half but Potsdam used a 14-2 run six minutes into the second half to gain control of the game and go on to post their second win of the weekend.

Myers finished with a team-high 11 points and nine rebounds for the Roos. Whalen had six points and 10 rebounds. Jenise Torres (Albany, N.Y.) also had six points along with five rebounds and English ended the game with six points, three rebounds and two assists.

Hannah Kmiecinski buried three 3-pointers and led the Bears with 11 points and three steals. Jessica Kouzan added nine points for SUNY Potsdam.

The Roos are next in action this Tuesday, Nov. 22 when they host Johnson State (Vt.) at 5 p.m.
