(Canton, N.Y.) – The SUNY Canton baseball team pulled out a dramatic, late game rally and rode an outstanding pitching performance from Josh Soffer (Ottawa, Ontario) to earn a 4-3 win over Fisher College on Saturday in Canton.

Soffer tossed a gem on the mound as the junior transfer allowed just one earned run and struck out six batters while scattering seven hits in nine innings.  The Ottawa native has recorded a team-leading 29 strikeouts this season.

The Roos began to chip away at the Falcons’ lead in the sixth inning.  Trailing 3-0, freshman Nick Belile (Norwood, N.Y.) trimmed the lead to 3-1 when he rapped an RBI ground out to first base.

The Roos made it a one-run game in the bottom of the seventh when freshman Phil Tsiaras (Toronto, Ontario) reached base to lead off on a Fisher error.  Junior Jeff Lake (Battersea, Ontario) followed with a single and then Tsiaras came around to score on an RBI-ground out by freshman Thomas Fearon (Ajax, Ontario).

The Roos capped off their rally with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn their first Sunrise Conference win of the year and first victory over the Falcons.  Evan Hammond (Ottawa, Ontario) ripped a one-out double and Belile drew a walk to put runners at first and second.  Both players advanced a base on a wild pitch and after the next SUNY Canton batter struck out, Tsiaras rapped the game-winning hit with a two-run, two-out single.

The Roos forced the Falcons to go three and out in the ninth inning to secure the win.

The Falcons won the second game 13-3.  Hammond and sophomore Larry Jankowski (Oneonta, N.Y.) each went 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Roos.  Lake added two more singles and a run.

Freshman Jordan Hunneyman (Redwood, N.Y.) was saddled with the loss as he struck out three batters and gave up four runs on five hits in three innings.  Freshman Casey Floyd (Ottawa, Ontario) also had three strikeouts and allowed nine runs on 11 hits in four innings.

Reynaldo Nunez doubled in the first game for Fisher and Jose Rodriguez went 2-for-5 in the nightcap with three RBIs.

The two teams will battle again on Sunday with the first game of the doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. in Canton.
