(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton baseball team swept Cazenovia College on Wednesday winning 5-1 and 5-2 in Canton.

SUNY Canton (6-16) received two solid pitching performances from sophomore Travis Legacy (Malone, N.Y.) in game one and junior Alex LaFountain (Keesville, N.Y.) in the nightcap. Each hurler tossed a complete game, as Legacy won his third game striking out two batters in seven innings while holding the Wildcats to just four singles, and LaFountain fanned nine batters in a two-hit performance over seven innings to earn his third win as well.

In the opening game, the Roos jumped out on the Wildcats early, building a 3-0 lead after two innings. In the first inning, freshman Eddy Morel (Lake Worth, Fla.) ripped a double down the left field line, advanced to second on a balk, and scored on an RBI-groundout by freshman Kyle Sacks (Clifton Park, N.Y.). In the second, Sacks lined a single that scored freshman Braden Giffen (Lake Worth, Fla.), who had hit a double, and senior Michael Zelyez (Brasher Falls, N.Y.), who was hit by a pitch.

The Roos scored two more runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning, when Giffen, who got on base with a single to left field, scored after senior Gerardo Torres (Theresa, N.Y.) reached on a fielder’s choice. Zelyez, who drew walk to get on safely, came around to score his second run when junior Jordan Hunneyman (Redwood, N.Y.) laced an RBI-single to left field.

The Wildcats got one run back in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI-single from Pat Shepardson.

Casey MacClaren took the loss on the mound allowing five runs on seven hits and five walks with two strikeouts in six innings.

In the nightcap, the Roos pounded out six hits, including three doubles to earn the sweep. They scored two runs in the first, two more in the second and their final run in the bottom of the sixth. In the first, freshman Kevin Hill (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) stroked an RBI-single and senior Tom Darling (Oswego, N.Y.) added a run-scoring double to center field. In the second, Zelyez drew a walk, stole second and third, and scored on single from Morel, who then came home on a sacrifice fly to left field by Hunneyman. Sacks provided the Roos final run when he knocked in his fourth RBI of the day with a single to center field that plated Morel, who had had smacked his second double of the afternoon.

Morel finished 2-for-4 with two runs. Hill also had two hits and Giffen drew a pair of walks.

Dan Hodne doubled for Cazenovia, who sent five pitches to the mound in the second game.

The Roos return to action this weekend hosting Fisher College in a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday starting at 12 p.m. each day.
