Jenkintown, PA – The SUNY Canton baseball team got a leadoff solo shot and loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the 9th inning but were unable to overcome the early deficit in a 6-2 loss to host Penn State Abington on Friday.
Abington used one run each in the first and second innings and a two-spot in the third to lead 4-0 after three innings. SUNY Canton got one back in the top of the fourth as Jordan Hunneyman (Redwood, NY) opened the frame with a walk. Braden Giffin (Lake Worth, FL) shot one into the gap in left center moving Hunneyman over to third. With one out Kyle Sacks (Clifton Parks, NY) grounded out scoring Hunneyman on the play.
The Nittany Lions (3-6) added two crucial insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning as the Roos (6-6) looked to make a late comeback in the top of the 9th. Giffin continued his remarkable start to the season leading off with a homer down the left field line, his second bomb of the season. SUNY Canton loaded the bases with no outs in the 9th but two infield outs at second and a strike out ended the comeback bid.
Zach Lawrence (West Palm Beach, FL) threw eight innings surrendering five earned runs while fanning three batters. Tom Kreiling pitched into the ninth inning giving up two earned and struck out four for Abington.
Giffin went 3-for-4 from the plate on the day improving his batting average to a remarkable .500 on the season in 40 at-bats. Jesse Barton (Belle Glade, FL) also produced a multi-hit game for the Roos.
SUNY Canton and Penn State Abington are scheduled for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
