Roos baseball defeats Wells 7-4

Aurora, NY – Seth Douglas finished 2-for-3 and drove in four runs as the SUNY Canton baseball team earned a 7-4 road win in a Friday matinee at Wells College.

The Roos (1-8) got on the board in the top of the second as Christian Nazario-Cruz opened the inning drawing a walk and Trevor Keleher laid down a bunt but reached on a throwing error by the pitcher as Cruz advanced to third. Nicolas Demarais attempted a sacrifice bunt but Cruz was gunned down at the plate on a fielder's choice. After Edward Malinoski, Jr. reached on a fielder's choice, Travis Schindler came up clutch with a two out 2 RBI double to left center to score Keleher and Malinoski.

SUNY Canton added a pair of runs in the fourth inning as Demarais started the frame with a one out base hit to center and stole second base with two out. Schindler showed patience drawing a walk and Wilson Matos reached on an error by the third baseman extending the inning as Seth Douglas laced a 2 RBI single to center to plate Demarais and Schindler.

Wells (0-6) got one back in the bottom half of the inning on an Anthony Aumick RBI single to left to score Mike Diehr. Brandon Shirley knotted the game at four in the fifth inning on a bases clearing 3 RBI double to right center after Matt Hall loaded the bases with two outs on a single, hit by pitch and walk.

The Roos regained the lead in the sixth after Christian Jorden loaded the bases on three straight walks and Douglas plated Malinoski on a sacrifice fly to center. Canton added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning as Malinoski drew a leadoff walk and Schindler turned on a double down the left field line. Matos scored Malinoski on an RBI double to left and Schindler scored on a Douglas RBI groundout.

Hall earned the no-decision on the hill giving up four earned runs on five hits over four and two-thirds innings with five strike outs. Austin Lamay earned his first win of the year giving up a single hit and no runs over two and one-third innings with two strike outs. Anthony Tur came on to retire six straight batters over the final two frames earning his first save of the year.

Jorden earned the loss for the Express giving up one earned run over two innings of relief work.

The baseball team is back in action on Saturday when it squares off with Ursinus College in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
