Houghton, NY – The SUNY Canton baseball team scored two runs each in the first, third and ninth innings to earn an Empire 8 weekend sweep with a 7-2 win at Houghton College on Saturday.
With the win the Roos improve to 7-12 overall and 3-3 in Empire 8 conference play, while the Highlanders drop to 11-13 and 1-4.
SUNY Canton jumped out to a quick start as Christian Nazario-Cruz (Naguabo, Puerto Rico) led off with a single up the middle. Seth Douglas (Reedsburg, WI) belted a two run homer with one out, his third round tripper of the season.
Houghton got one back in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly. SUNY Canton used the long ball to extend the lead to 4-1 in the third when Chris Roenbeck (Plattsburgh, NY) hit his second dinger in as many days scoring Jeremy Baez (Bronx, NY) who drew a two out walk. Wilson Matos (Bronx, NY) added a fifth run in the fourth on an RBI triple to center plating Edward Malinoski, Jr. (Evans Mills, NY), who reached on a one-out base hit.
The Roos added two insurance r uns in the ninth as Matos once again came through with an RBI triple to score Cruz. Douglas followed with a single through the right side to plate Matos. Houghton got one in the bottom of the inning but Khalil Bratton (Queens, NY) closed the door for the victory.
Robbie Osterer (Ottawa, ON) had a productive outing on the mound throwing six innings of four hit ball giving up just a single earned run. He struck out five batters and walked three. Bratton gave up one earned on one hit and a walk over the final three innings.
The baseball team is scheduled to open its home schedule when it hosts Southern Vermont College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
