The SUNY Canton men’s hockey team skated to 1-1 tie Friday night against the Southern New Hampshire University Penmen.
“We knew it was going to be a battle tonight,” Head Coach Eric McCambly expressed after the game.”We had plenty of chances to win; we just couldn’t do it around the net.”
The teams were scoreless through the first period, though the Roos had chances. A Darren Camp (Canton, N.Y.) goal was waved off at 7:16 when officials ruled the net was knocked off its moorings before the puck crossed the goal line.
But the Roos still netted the first of the night when Dave Schneider (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored his team leading twelfth goal of the year sliding the rebound from a Corey Frizell (Orleans, Ontario) shot along the ice past Penmen goaltender Tyler Holske at the 8:50 mark of the second period. Freshman Austin Root (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) also assisted on the goal.
The Roos held on to their narrow one goal lead until Southern New Hampshire pulled their goaltender to add an extra attacker. Frank O’Connor took advantage and sent a shot off a pass from teammate Chris Hickey from the right point over the left shoulder of Roos goaltender Michael Pittman (Amarillo, Texas) with 36 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.
Despite controlling the puck for most of the extra session, the Roos couldn’t put one past Holske for the win.
Holske made 38 saves for the Penmen, while Pittman stopped 20 shots from the Roos.
The Roos, now 8-0-1 on the season, face off against Franklin Pierce University Saturday night at 7 p.m.
“Tomorrow we’re going to focus on the same things, just maybe a little bit harder; more disciplined,” McCambly said.
