Julia Gilbert from Phoenix, N.Y. who plays for the women’s soccer team has been named one of the first New York Sea Grant Launch Stewards.
The six students selected are participating in a nationwide campaign to educate boaters about how to inspect their vessels to slow the spread of aquatic invasive species.They will be working at public boat launch sites along Lake Ontario, Oneida Lake and the Salmon River and the work they do is helpful to resource managers and agencies such as the State Department of Environmental Conservation.
Gilbert is a sophomore majoring in engineering science with an interest in alternative energy and the environment. Last season Gilbert played and started in eight games in her first year as a defender.
