Canton, NY – The women's lacrosse team never trailed as it cruised past visiting Medaille College, 18-6, on a frigid day in Canton on Saturday.
Hannah Christiansen got the scoring started in the sixth minute when she netted her second of the year off a dish from Nikki Holmes (Ogdensburg, NY). Tressa Goolden (Canton, NY) set up Keeley Rice's (Potsdam, NY) 10th goal of the year 10 minutes in. The Mavericks responded with a pair of Denay O'Connor scores off passes from Emily Brophy to knot the score at 2-2.
SUNY Canton responded with three scores in just 26 seconds as Megan Poupore (Massena, NY) beat the goalie twice along with one from Rice. Christiansen had two assists for the Roos in the spurt. Lora Ardoin (Houston, TX), Christiansen, Goolden and Rice continued the scoring assault as SUNY Canton opened up a 9-2 advantage.
The teams traded a pair of goals as Joelle Percy (Black River, NY) netted her first career goal in a Roo uniform as SUNY Canton led 11-4 at intermission. The Roos continued to keep the foot on the gas pedal as seven different players scored unanswered goals in the second frame to blow open an 18-4 advantage.
O'Connor added two late goals for the 18-6 final. Becca Kieffer (Lee Center, NY) made four saves in her second win of the season, while Mia Wagner turned aside 12 shots for the visitors.
Rice led the Roos with five goals and one assist, while Christiansen had three goals and two assists. Poupore netted three goals while Goolden and Ardoin had two goals and two assists each. Christiansen was a force all over the field picking up a game-high six draw controls to go with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Holmes led all players with four caused turnovers.
The women's lacrosse team hits the road for a Wednesday contest at 4 p.m.
