Houghton, NY – Junior captain Taylor Saltus (Clintonville, NY) posted her first double-double of the season but the SUNY Canton women's basketball team dropped a 59-43 road decision at Houghton College on Saturday.
Saltus finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with three assists and three steals. Tatiana Laroche (Elmont, NY) led the Roos (0-6) with 15 points, while Jenifer Morgan-Aubin (Hartford, NY) hauled down nine rebounds to go with her eight points.
Elle Reed led all players with 21 points for Houghton (4-1). Hannah Manwaring recorded a double-double on 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, while Leslie Moose added nine in the scoring column.
The Highlanders jumped out to a quick 11-2 start less than three minutes in and held a 22-6 advantage after the opening quarter. The Roos bounced back outscoring the hosts 16-9 over the second 10-minute period to trim the deficit to just 31-22 at intermission.
Saltus led the Roos with seven points and seven rebounds in the opening half, while Morgan-Aubin chipped in six points. Elle Reed paced the Highlanders with 13 points.
The teams battled back and forth finishing with 12 points each in a back-and-forth third quarter. The Highlanders pulled away pouring in 16 points in the final quarter compared to just nine for Canton leading to the 59-43 final.
Both teams were fairly even in a number of statistical categories although the Highlanders shot 36 percent from the field compared to a 25 percent mark for the Roos. Houghton also scored 20 points off 18 Canton turnovers.
The women's basketball team has a quick turnaround as it hosts Bard College on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Roos House.
